Is Judi Dench Contemplating Retirement From Acting? Veteran Star Drops A Hint

Judi Dench may just be planning on taking her final step back from showbiz. Her recent comments on her future in the industry, appear to hint as such.

Judi Dench has been consistently gracing the screen since 1964. The now veteran actress, had made her debut with Charles Chricton's The Third Secret, in the role of Miss Humphries. Fast forward to six decades, the actress' last full-fledged film to hit the screens was Richard Eyre's Allelujah, in which she essayed the role of Mary. There is a good chance that Allelujah may just have been her last release.

Is Judi Dench ready to bid adieu to acting?


Judi Dench recently marked her presence at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. When asked by The Mirror to speak about the projects she has in the works up ahead, she simply exclaimed, "No, no. I can’t even see." When asked to elaborate on the same, her agent intervened asserting she had nothing else to add. 

For the unversed, suffers from macular degeneration of her eyes, which can cause permanent and rapid central vision loss. The veteran actress had revealed the particulars of her diagnosis back in 2012 following which there has been consistent speculation about her eyesight.

Judi Dench has addressed coping with macular degeneration


Judi Dench's macular degeneration diagnosis has greatly interjected with her process of approaching roles. The actress, who has a photographic memory, for obvious reasons had no issues in remembering her lines. However, with the gradual loss of her eyesight, that facet of being an actor is something that she has described as feeling "hopeless" about.

At an event for the London-based Vision Foundation back in 2021, she said, "You find a way of just getting about and getting over the things that you find very difficult. I've had to find another way of learning lines and things, which is having great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over and over again."
