Joaquin Phoenix Reveals Joker 2 Co-star Lady Gaga 'Spit Coffee' After Listening To Him Sing

Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix is all set to return with the sequel of Joker titled Joker: Folie a Deux. In the teaser, Joaquin Phoenix’s character Arthur Fleck loves to sing and adding to this, the Oscar-winning actor revealed a few details about the upcoming film and how he collaborated with his co-star Lady Gaga, especially for the musical portions.

Lady Gaga’s reaction to Joaquin Phoenix’s singing

In a recent interview with Empire, Joaquin Phoenix said that, “I do seem to remember her spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that felt good, that was exciting, and made me feel confident."

He further added, “Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘Go with what you feel, it’s fine’. For somebody who’s not a performer in that way, it can be…uncomfortable to do that, but also very exciting.”

Interestingly, in further details, Joaquin Phoenix also mentioned that the vocal of his character was kept purposefully unpolished in the film. He said, “It was important to protect that with poor phrasing and occasional bum notes."

He further added, "Arthur grew up hearing his mother play these songs on the radio. He’s not a singer, and he shouldn’t sound like a professional singer. He should sound like somebody that’s taking a shower and just bursts out into song.”

About Joker: Folie a Deux

Directed by Todd Philips, Joker: Folie a Deux, is the sequel of 2019 film Joker. It will continue with the story of the failed comedian Arthur Fleck in which he meets the love of his life Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital. Upon his release, the two of them embark on a doomed romantic misadventure.

Joker: Folie a Deux will also star Zazie Beetz, Jacob Lofland, Harry Lawtey Brendan Gleeson, Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Leigh Gill and Tim Dillon among others. The film will release in theatres on October 4, 2024 in India.
