Joker Folie à Deux Vs Joker Box Office Collection: How Is Joaquin Phoenix Starrer Sequel Faring?

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga starrer Joker: Folie à Deux hit the big screens on October 2. Amid much anticipation and banking on the Gandhi Jayanti holiday, the film opened to good numbers. However, day two collections paint a different story for the latest Hollywood release. Meanwhile, negative reviews of the film have also gone viral on social media, pegging it as an unworthy successor of the billion-dollar grossing predecessor Joker (2019).

Joker: Folie à Deux box office collection witnesses a steep decline

Joker 2 opened to ₹5.15 crore on day 1 but the collections dipped to ₹1.25 crore on Saturday, which is not a good indication for the film. The two-day business of the film stands at ₹6.4 crore. The interesting thing to note here is that Joker 2 has only been released in India in English and no other regional languages, which might put a dent in its collection.

When compared to Joker (2019) box collections, the numbers are a bit lower for the sequel. The 2019 film collected ₹5.15 crore on its opening day and ₹3.35 crore. Overall, the reception of Joker 2, critically, has also been underwhelming.

The original 2019 film, Joker was supposed to be a standalone film, but the R-rated film was critically and commercially successful, and went on to generate over a billion dollars globally. This also greenlit its sequel. The first film followed the origin story of Arthur Fleck aka Joker who is famously known for being Batman's enemy. It starred Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy. It was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning two. Joaquin Phoenix received his first Oscar for Best Actor whereas Hildur Guðnadóttir won for Best Original Score.
