The Joker juggernaut carries on as the latest DC-flick continues its impressive hold in domestic and in its overseas markets. The Joaquin Phoenix film also raked in impressive numbers in India as it recently passed ₹67 crores in the country. In spite of facing stiff competition from Bollywood biggies like Housefull 4, Joker became Warner Bros. most successful movie among the Indian audience. The film is now placed 14th in the list of top Hollywood grossers at the Indian box office. According to Box Office Mojo report, Joker has collected over $986 million worldwide and is expected to reach the coveted $1 billion mark sometime this week.
Joker inches closer towards huge box office milestone
As of last Sunday (its sixth weekend in theatres), Todd Phillips’ Joker made its way to another $9.2 million to bring its domestic collection to just over $313 million. With next year’s Oscar nomination campaign in full flow, Joker can gain some good momentum to end its domestic run just over-and-above DC’s 2018 blockbuster Aquaman. The latest character-study has already shattered several records at the box-office. The movie recently surpassed Deadpool’s worldwide collection to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. Earlier when Joker crossed the $950 million mark, it also created history by becoming the most profitable comic book movie of all time, surpassing the likes of The Mask, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Deadpool, Batman and Venom.
Additionally, if DC’s latest drama reaches the billion-dollar mark, Joker will become the first-ever R-rated movie in history to achieve the milestone. Over the years, the worldwide collection of big franchise-films like Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Transformers etc. have been boosted by impressive collections from the Chinese box office. The film also did not hold the advantage of 3D ticket sales unlike most comic book films of the past decade.
Upon reaching the billion-dollar mark, the $62.5 million budgeted venture will only become the second movie after 2008’s The Dark Knight to do so without getting a China release. Behind the likes of three MCU heavyweights and three of Disney’s remakes/sequels, Joker is already the seventh highest-grossing film of the year.
DC Films will now move forward with Margot Robbie-starrer Birds of Prey. Scheduled to be released on February 7, 2020; the film will focus upon the DC Comics eponymous team of the same name. The much-awaited Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel to 2017’s smash-hit Wonder Woman will also release next year on June 5.
