Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, officially enters the billion dollar club

Barbie has been going strong at the box office ever since its July 21 release. The film has crossed one milestone after another in quick succession. The film has now created history by entering the coveted billion dollar club. It achieved this in less that 3 weeks of its release.

Barbie crosses the billion dollar mark at the global box office

Barbie has been enjoying a stellar run in theatres. It broke a record with only its fourth day in theatres, as it gave Warner Bros. its best-ever Monday, raking in $26 million. Day 10 of its theatrical run saw it inching closer to the $800 million mark, worldwide. Now, as per a People report, the film has made history by collecting  a billion dollars

Only one other film this year, Super Mario Bros. has managed this feat. The adventure-comedy film made $1.165 billion during its lifetime.  The Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer has also made Greta Gerwig the first solo female director  to helm a billion dollar film.

Margot Robbie had pitched Barbie as a billion-dollar film to Mattel

In an interview during the promotions for Barbie, Margot Robbie opened up about her pitch to Mattel during their meeting. She revealed how she had pitched the film as essentially one more example of a great idea being paired with a visionary director. Robbie had drawn a parallel between Jurassic Park helmed by Steven Spielberg and Barbie which was to be helmed by Greta Gerwig. Robbie had also pitched the film as a billion-dollar idea, at the time, unaware that Barbie would actually achieve the feat.
