American-Italian filmmaker Martin Scorsese once again criticised the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a press conference for his upcoming Netflix flick The Irishman. He said that such films do not capture the actual essence of cinema. He further added to his comments saying that Marvel films are not the real cinema and asked the theatres to show films that have more of narrative, as reported by foreign media. In the past too the director has criticised the superhero films which make it big at the box-office. The legendary filmmaker is under attack by supporters for comparing Marvel films to 'theme parks'.

'Theatres have become amusement parks'

The 76-year-old filmmaker spoke about the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a press conference ahead of the screening of The Irishman at the BFI London Film Festival, alongside the actors of his film, Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino. Scorsese feels that the theatres have become more of amusement parks.

"Theatres have become amusement parks. That is all fine and good but don't invade everything else in that sense," he said. The filmmaker then said, "It's not cinema, it's something else. We shouldn't be invaded by it. We need cinemas to step up and show films that are narrative films." He then added that it is good for the ones who like watching such types of films and he also admires knowing what goes in making of these movies. However, he said that such films are not his kind as it is creating a different type of audience who just thinks that cinema is all about this.

Scorsese slammed for his statement

Earlier this month too he spoke about the MCU films in an interview. He said, "I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema," he told the outlet. "Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being," he added.

The comments were not well received by the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn. In a tweet, he said that Scorsese is being hypocritical to judge a film before even watching it. The Avengers director Joss Whedon, along with the actors Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson slammed the director.
