Back in April 2019, makers of Sonic The Hedgehog released the first trailer for the film. Sonic's design was reportedly not liked by the ardent fans of the game. The first design for Sonic consisted of human teeth, skinny legs and arms which did not evidently come any close to the original character. Within a few hours of the trailer dropping, fans started being vocal about the bad design and asked for a redesign. Various petitions were also filed by fans to change the design of Sonic. Back in May, director of the film Jeff Fowler had addressed the fan's concerns and promised the fix the design of the character.

Fans who were waiting to watch the redesigned Sonic were reportedly very happy with the new design as it came very close to the original. Tyson Hesse, an American animator who had previously worked on various Sonic comics was brought on board to fix the character design. Hesse has stated that he worked with the director and various artists and production department to get the design close to the source material.
