Sony developing Spider-Man spinoff 'Madame Web'

Sony plans on producing a movie based on the Spider-Man character Madame Web, a clairvoyant mutant who predicts the future specifically of Spider-themed heroes

Sony plans on producing a movie based on the Spider-Man character Madame Web, according to a global media agency. According to sources, the film’s script is written by screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The entire script revolves around Jared Leto's Spider-Man spinoff about the life of a living vampire. 

The history of Madame Web

The entire project is under Sony's Palak Patel, overseeing all the major occurring in the movie. However, the Sony studio has declined to issue any comments regarding the news but are expected to open about the project in the coming weeks.

The history of Madame Web goes way back to the 1980s when The Amazing Spider-Man No. 210 was introduced featuring Madame Web, a clairvoyant mutant who specializes in predicting the future specifically of Spider-themed superheroes. She mentored not only Peter Parker’s alter ego, but also multiple generations of heroes calling themselves Spider-Woman.

Traditionally portrayed as the blind, helpless paralyzed old woman, she is surrounded by a web-like machine necessary to keep her alive. She always stay far away from any direct conflicts, favouring the option to send others to do the physical stuff on her behalf will finally be featured doing some action in the upcoming project.

The high-profile split 

The release news of Madame Web came weeks after the studio had a high-profile split with Marvel Studios over the use of Spider-Man in Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Spider-Man: Far from Home, the most recent film to star Tom Holland as the superhero, stands as Sony's highest-grossing movie ever with more than $1.12 billion globally.

The Sony studio has the rights to both Spider-Man and the other characters related to him. In addition to Morbius, which opens July 31, 2020, the studio has Venom 2 and multiple Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse follow-ups in the works.
