Theron: benefitted from ‘white privilege’ growing up during Apartheid

Charlize Theron has said she benefitted from "white privilege" while growing up in South Africa during the Apartheid between 1948 and early 1990s, according to reports. The actor made the comments at a fundraiser with co-star David Oyelowo.

'Aim to make younger children believe in unity'

Reports say that during a discussion with actor David Oyelwo at an annual fundraiser for Nigerian children's educational and health program GEANCO where she said that her aim is to make the younger generation to believe in unity.

Theron said that she is obviously is a white person who benefitted from her white privilege and grew up during the Apartheid era and benefitted from it. The children in South Africa today were all born in post-Apartheid period and she feels that it is her duty to not let children forget and to let them know that there is a unity that she is with them, standing together.

Theron on Philanthropy

Theron reportedly talked about her philanthropy work in South Africa by saying that a lot of kids do not know her and strangely always know that she is a South African and that's heaven. She said that it is amazing to be around sisters and to have that be the thing that people know you by. She further added that it has always moved her so much when they (children run-up to her and say, Hey Sissy!. 

GEANCO co-founder Afam Onyema, Scott Eastwood, Evan Ross, Brian J White, and Charlie Barnett were also present at the event.
