The first one to have donned the red and blue costume and give life to the American superhero 'Spider-man' based on the same character in Marvel Comics, Tobey Maguire may take on a superhero character again.
Known as the original Spiderman, whom a lot of Marvel fans grew up watching in the first decade of the 2000s was well received. Maguire says that if he is offered, he might give a nod to another superhero role in future.
"I just don't really have an 'I would or wouldn't do' mindset. I'll just do whatever it is that comes that I feel called to, that may or may not fit in any kind of box," said Maquire to the Hollywood Reporter when asked about the chances of getting back in a superhero suit.
What may come as a surprise to many 'Spidey' fans is the lack of competition, jealousy or fuelled up drama between the predecessor and his successors here. Ever since the role went on to Andrew Garfield before Tom Holland came into the picture, the actors have had nothing but respect and admiration for each other. When Holland entered the club, Maguire appreciated him as well.
Maguire said that he is happy with Garfield and Holland's version of the superhero.
"What I've seen, I've appreciated. I like both of the actors a ton. I think they're both super talented. I would just say I appreciated them and I like the actors. I like the choices," he further said.
Maguire was a part of Sami Raimi films 'Spider-Man'(2002), 'Spider-Man 2' (2004) and 'Spider-Man 3'(2007). With the last one, his take on the web-slinger ended. The first two were critical and commercials successes, and even though the third one received mixed reviews, it performed well at the box office.
Andrew Garfield became the new 'Spidey' in 2012 with 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and its sequel 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'in 2014. Garfield gave a new flavour and dimension to the character, quite different from the comics, nonetheless more or less equally loved by the fans.
While there are two factions of Maguire fand Garfield fans, there are a lot of things that changed from the predecessor to the successor.
- When pitted against each other, one would realise the differences in the character. Maguire's Spider-man's origin theory followed the structure of the comics. While Garfield's origin and the backstory of his parents were modified, and the way he acquired his power was much more than a random spider-bite.
- Maguire's portrayal of Peter Parker, with his shy, geeky and simple demeanor, had won a lot of hearts. While Garfield turned things around. What made him a geek a decade ago, instantly made him cool. He effortlessly made Spider-Man the coolest guy on the block, especially when he fought the bullies, and stoop up for the bullied kids at school. This was contrary to the comic's depiction nevertheless, was loved by many.
- Maguire's portrayal of Spider-Man was also quite different from Garfield's in the sense that when Maguire put on his suit, he still remained the guy under the suit - Peter Parker. But Garfield changed this as well. When he donned the suit, he became a different guy altogether. He became closer to the guy the fans know in the comics, fighting the lizards and the villains with sass, coolness, making it look fun.
- Even when you consider their lady loves in the movie. There are variations, not only in the characters but their chemistry as well. Maguire's love story with Mary Jane was slow and awkward right from the start. For some fans, that is what made it authentic, while for Garfield's fans they prefer the Peter-Gwen story. The latter's story was more engaging since the start, and their chemistry was undeniable. Fans also say that their on-and-off real-life relationship played a great role in it.
Back in 2012, Maguire and Garfield came together in an interview with VMan magazine, where Maguire interviewed Garfield and they shared insights on their roles, the character development and the difference in the time period when both of them played the roles in terms of the box office effect.
Now, Holland has taken on Spider-Man and he has given a whole new dimension to the character. Fans say that he is a bit of both, Maguire and Garfield. But with his entry into the 'Avengers: Civil War'' (2016) he has opened up a new world for the character. Holland already had his own stand-alone film, 'Spider-Man: Homecoming.' (2017) and was last seen in 2018's Ávengers: Infinity War' where the superhero died and left the fans devastated.
Holland's 'Spider-man' is at stake here. Now, fans mostly see him through his part and contribution to the Avengers. But, 'Avengers 4' is all set to release this year in April, and the original Avengers crew will avenge the death of the fallen. We don't know how that will pan out but Holland will be back once more in 'Spider-Man: far from Home' that will release on July 5.
