Reflecting on 2023, it proved to be a year marked by significant fluctuations. Notably, the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild made substantial moves, impacting studios and streaming platforms and leading to production halts. Despite these behind-the-scenes challenges, Hollywood experienced a remarkable year, cementing its bold cultural influence, particularly with the groundbreaking success of the Barbenheimer double feature. With that, let us take a look at some of the best Hollywood movies that released in India in 2023.

Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan has had so many major films in a relatively short time, that Oppenheimer might seem like a given, rather than the triumphant fusion of everything he’s passionate about: Large format film; the tension between humanity and science; the turmoil of a brilliant mind; and the wonder of an exceptional group coming together to make an impossible thing (in this case a nuclear weapon) but also on a meta level, the film. The film released on July 21, 2023.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

As good as Into the Spider-Verse was, the second chapter pushes a lot against both superhero convention and the limits of animation. However, the film received positive responses from viewers across the globe, making it a commercial success in theatres. The film released on June 1, 2023.

Barbie

Here’s one thing that’s not been said enough about Greta Gerwig’s runaway sensation: It’s the funniest movie of the year. With apologies to Cord Jefferson’s blistering debut, American Fiction, and Nicole Holofcener’s white-lie opus, You Hurt My Feelings, nothing was as clever as Gerwig’s I’ll-have-my-cake-and-eat-it-too balancing act of brand marketing and gender satire. The film released on July 21, 2023.

Priscilla

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla is so beautiful to look at, it’s easy not to notice its rigorous restraint and minimalism in storytelling. It provides a singular showcase for her very capable actors, Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, that’s about all the small things — the moments that might be imperceptible were it not for her quiet gaze. That the Elvis estate wasn’t on board just means she did her job as an independent artist. The film is releasing in India in partnership with MUBI on December 15.

Mission Impossible

The truth is, Mission Impossible movie is a mindless entertaining action. Tom Cruise delivers on some awesome stunts (seldom compared to other MI films). The official synopsis of the film read, "Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands. With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission -- not even the lives of those he cares about most." The film released on July 12, 2023.
