Kalki 2898 AD: Prabhas' Sci-Fi Film To Surpass Adipurush Lifetime Collection In 1st Weekend

Despite being inspired by Hindu mythology, the fate of the two films have been quite different at the box office.

Prabhas starrer Kalki 2898 AD released in cinema halls on June 27 after multiple delays. The pan-India film was greenlit as Project K in 2020 and has opened to great response, collecting approximately ₹298.5 crore gross worldwide in two days, according to the production house Vyjayanthi Movies. Apart from South states, the film is performing exceptionally well in North markets and will look to wrap up its first weekend run of 4 days with over ₹100 crore business in Hindi language alone.

After Adipurush, Kalki 2898 AD is Prabhas' second film with a mythological connection. However, the fate of the two films have been quite different.

What worked for Kalki 2898 AD and didn't for Adipurush?

Adipurush is a modern day retelling of Ramayana. Meanwhile, Kalki 2898 AD has takes place at the time of Mahabharata and continues into a dystopian future. Some characters from Mahabharata and the battle of Kurukshetra have also been featured in Nag Ashwin's Kalki 2898 AD.

Adipurush was widely panned for its VFX, whereas the visuals of Kalki 2898 AD have earned unanimous praise. Another differentiating factor is how the world building takes place in the two films. Nag Ashwin easily and effectively transports viewers into the universe of Kalki 2898 AD, whereas Om Raut failed to do so, leading to the film receiving bad reviews all over.

Adipurush vs Kalki 2898 AD box office comparison

Adipurush witnessed a better opening than Kalki 2898 AD in Hindi. The Om Raut directorial earned ₹37.25 crore whereas Kalki 2898 AD collected ₹22.50 crore on day 1 in Hindi. However, the word-of-mouth for Adipurush was poor leading to a decline in its numbers at a fast pace. On the other hand, the praise for Kalki 2898 AD has been unanimous and according to the trend, the film may surpass ₹500 crore mark in the extended first weekend itself.

Adipurush box office run ended with ₹393 crore worldwide. It minted ₹50 crore overseas whereas Kalki 2898 AD has collected over ₹60 crore outside India in two days only. Kalki 2898 AD worldwide gross collections stand at an impressive ₹298.5 crore gross in two days, according to the makers Vyjayanthi Movies.
