In a tribute to Puneeth Rajkumar his last film Gandhadagudi - Journey of a True Hero is all set to make its world television premiere on October 29. The timing coincides with the anniversary of his tragic passing. Meanwhile, his last project also promises to be a fitting tribute to his memory and released on October 28, 2022. This event will be broadcast on a popular Kannada entertainment channel.

Gandhadagudi is a docu-feature film

Gandhadagudi is a docu-feature that promises an unforgettable journey. It takes audiences on an adventure through the lush forests, pristine oceans, diverse flora, and fauna of Karnataka. In the feature film, Puneeth Rajkumar treks across the length and breadth of Karnataka, from Nagarahole to the Kali river, alongside National Award-winning wildlife filmmaker Amoghavarsha.

The film's title, Gandhadagudi holds a special place in the Rajkumar family's history, meaning 'the abode of Sandalwood." It pays homage to the Sandalwood forests that are an integral part of Karnataka's heritage.

Gandhadagudi is a nod to cinematic history

It's worth noting the rich cinematic history behind the title. Back in the early 1970s, when rampant sandalwood smuggling threatened the region's invaluable forest wealth, actor-producer M P Shankar went on a mission to bring attention to the issue. He produced Gandhada Gudi and it was directed by Vijay. The film featured Dr. Rajkumar in the role of an honest forest officer.

This film became a milestone in Kannada cinema, being the first mainstream movie to champion the cause of forest protection and wildlife conservation. Dr. Rajkumar's portrayal and the film's storytelling turned it into a blockbuster, with a remarkable 25-week run in theaters. The movie's success even led to a sequel in 1994, titled Gandhada Gudi Part 2 where Rajkumar made a brief appearance, passing on the legacy to his son, Shivarajkumar.
