Netflix Vs Soham Shah: Seems like trouble is brewing for Netflix and Squid Game. The popular South Korean series has landed in legal trouble after the writer of the show and the OTT platform have been sued by Indian filmmaker Soham Shah over copyright infringement.
Squid Game in legal trouble?
According to a report in TMZ, filmmaker Soham Shah has claimed that the Netflix’s popular series is a copy of his 2009 film Luck. As per the lawsuit, the Squid Game franchise is reportedly straight from the storyline from the movie Luck.
Luck, starring Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Shruti Haasan, tells the story of a group of desperate and indebted people enticed to take part in a series of competitive games for the chance to win large sums of money. Reportedly, the film has a striking resemblance to the 2021 series Squid Game.
More details about the lawsuit filed by Soham Shah
Soham Shah has stated that the plotline of Luck was developed in 2006 and the film was released globally in 2009. Netflix had access to this film due to its extensive advertising and marketing.
The lawsuit points out that creator of the Squid Game Hwang Dong-hyuk claims to have written Squid Game in the same year Luck was released, which has now raised questions about the originality of the Netflix’s series.
The lawsuit also highlights that the Squid Game has contributed to Netflix’s market value, which reportedly is $900 million. Reports suggest Soham Shah is seeking compensation and is aiming to block Netflix from further infringing on his copyright.
Netflix is yet to respond to the lawsuit and claims made by Soham.
