The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), on Tuesday, crumbled after Mohanlal and other members of the body put in a mass resignation. This was triggered after Siddique, who served as secretary of the body, was accused of sexual assault by actress Revathy Sampath. However, it has been reported that Mohanlal consulted fellow actor Mammootty before stepping down from his post.

Did Mammootty advise Mohanlal to step down as President?

Mohanlal served as the president of AMMA before putting in his resignation. According to a report in Onmanorama, the Malayalam superstar consulted with Mammootty over his decision to step down. The Kaathal actor reportedly agreed that resignation would be the best course of action.

As per a statement released by the association, the executive committee was dissolved following incidents of sexual abuse by some members, which were reported in the print, online and visual media. In the statement, the AMMA also expressed gratitude to the Hema Committee for ‘pointing out their errors’. “AMMA has decided to disperse the executive committee on moral grounds in the light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement read.

The body included Jagadish, Jayan Cherthala, Baburaj, Kalabhavan Shajon, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joy Mathew, Suresh Krishna, Tini Tom, Ananya, Vinu Mohan, Tovino Thomas, Sarayu, Ansiba and Jomol.

Owing to the mass resignation, members of the outgoing Executive Committee will serve as an interim committee. And within two months, AMMA will hold elections to appoint new office bearers.

Hema Committee Report has jolted Mollywood

After the Hema Committee report went public, several actresses from Malayalam and Bengali cinema came forward and filed cases against the prominent figures of Mollywood. They accused them of sexual assault and harassment. As per the latest update, a new case has been filed against veteran actor Siddique. A Malayalam actress has alleged that she was raped by him in 2016.

SIT, formed by the Kerala government, is currently probing all the cases.
