Mohanlal starrer Barroz has been facing delays since last year. The movie was originally scheduled to release around Onam in 2023 but was pushed to March 2024, only to get delayed two times since March. The reason behind the delay is said to be post-production work. However, now, the film has fallen into legal trouble after an NRI author sued the makers over copyright violations.
Why Barroz is facing copyright allegations?
According to multiple reports, a German-based author George Thundiparambil requested the Ernakulam District Court to issue a prohibitory injunction restraining the release of Barozz. In his complaint, the author has alleged that the story has been copied from his novel Maya. He has filed a case against writer Jijo Punnoose, producer Antony Perumbavoor and TK Rajeev Kumar.
According to reports, the author had sent a legal notice to the makers in July this year asking them to desist from releasing the movie and clear the copyright issue. However, the makers denied the copyright claims in the reply sent to him in August.
What is the plot of Barroz?
The movie is based on a man named Barroz, a treasure guardian who has been protecting Vasco da Gama's hidden treasure for 400 years and has been entrusted to hand over the wealth only to a true descendant of da Gama. The movie is said to be based on Jijo's novel Barroz: Guardian of D'Gama's Treasure. The film is a children's fantasy directed by Mohanlal and also stars Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Tuhin Menon, and Guru Somasundaram in pivotal roles. The original score was composed by Mark Kilian, with songs by Lydian Nadhaswaram.
The makers are yet to announce the release date of the movie.
