Mollywood #MeToo Movement: The shocking revelations of the Hema Committee Report have jolted the Malayalam Film Industry with several female artists coming forward and levelling a sexual misconduct allegations against the prominent male figures. In the latest development, Malayalam actress Sheela has reacted to the ongoing controversy.
Malayalam actress Sheela’s reaction to Hema Committee Report
According to reports in Mathrubhumi, the veteran actress told reporters, “The police and courts ask for proof. Can we take a photo or selfie when someone suddenly comes and hugs or kisses us? Are we expected to say, ‘Let me take a photo for proof’? In the past, there we’re only landline phones and there were no ways to record anything. The actors never imagined that the Hema Committee would form in the future. One cannot anticipate these situations. How can proof be provided for such matters of abuse?”
Sheela also lauded the WCC and said, “I am so proud of the WCC and the battle they have been fighting from then until now, Just think about it. How beautiful and talented those actors are. Their careers have been affected. Their activism, is truly remarkable!”.
Reportedly, Sheela also criticised the industry for paying women actors less than their male counterparts. She also cited her own experiences, noting that despite the presence of women-centric roles in films, women are still undervalued and underpaid compared to men.
What is the Hema Committee Report that has taken by storm in Mollywood?
The Hema Committee Report which was formed in 2017 had submitted for finding in 2019. But, it was made official on August 19, 2024, that too a redacted version of the document with the names of the accused concealed. The committee comprises of a three-member panel of retired High Court Justice K. Hema, former actress Sharada, and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari. They unveiled the systematic sexual abuse and discrimination faced by women artists in the Malayalam film industry.
Who is veteran actress Sheela?
Sheela is an Indian veteran actress who predominantly works in Malayalam cinema. An interesting trivia about her is that the actress holds a Guinness World Record for being paired with Prem Nazir.
Her notable works include Chemmeen, Manassinakka, Adhurs, Seethakoka Chiluka and Kannaappanun among others. She has been awarded with the National Film Award for actor in Best Supporting Role as well as four Kerala State Awards.
