What led to the 'boycott' of The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix

In one of the skits in the episode, Krushna Abhishek, imitated Jackie Shroff in Bengali accent. The gag was seemingly presented for Kajol, who is a Bengali. Tagore's iconic patriotic song Ekla Chalo Re was spoofed to elicit laughter. As part of the segment, Krushna sang Ekla Chalo Re with some rephrased wordings and said, "Akela nahi chalne ka. Ek din main akela chal raha tha aur paanch kutte mere piche padd gaye. Main jaanta hoon maine kaise apne aapko bachaya hai." This spoof has not gone down well with the Bengali community who called it defamatory and offensive.

Legal notice issued to The Great Indian Kapil Show

Following outrage within the Bengali community over the spoof on Rabindranath Tagore, a legal notice was issued to Netflix over the specific episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show. The legal notice sent by Bongo Bhashi Mahasabha Foundation alleged that disparaging remarks were made against the Nobel laureate which risk offending religious and cultural sentiments.

Netflix had earlier responded to the legal notice, saying that the comedy programme is purely intended for entertainment purposes and features parodies and sketches without targeting any individual or community.
