In just the first week after its May 1 release, the series climbed to the top of Netflix's worldwide non-English TV chart in 43 countries, making it the most-viewed Indian series on the platform globally. What do we know about Heeramandi season 1?
Set between 1920 and 1947, during the period when the subcontinent was partitioned into India and Pakistan, Season 1 unfolds in the Heeramandi district of Lahore, British India. This area is known for the tawaifs, akin to Japan's geishas, who were skilled in music and dance and courted by nobility. The central characters are Mallikajaan (played by Manisha Koirala), the shrewd queen of Heeramandi, and her ambitious niece Fareedan (Sonakshi Sinha), who aspires to take her aunt's place.
