Captain Marvel Review: Brie Larson's fierce superhero avatar is the perfect Women's Day tribute

What could have been a better day to celebrate the strength of a woman than International Women's Day? After much-anticipation, Marvel Studios has finally released its first woman superhero film 'Captain Marvel' on Friday, March 8. Featuring Brie Larson in the lead, the film not only gives a brief about the strongest superhero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also gives an insight into what creates a hero. So now that the film's finally here let's see what's it all about.  

Setting the scene 

Vers who is a Kree warrior hero who struggles to remember her past and often gets a flashback of an incident in her dreams. She sees a woman fighting and getting killed in a brutal battle, however, she doesn't recognize her. She is very confident about her fight moves but is training to control her emotions, which often holds her back. She feels some extreme energy inside her at times, but Yon-Rogg, a Kree military commander, helps her to deal with her thoughts process and not lose control. For the unaware, Kree is a fictional scientifically and technologically advanced militaristic alien race based out in a planet called Hala. 

Plot

Vers joins the Kree soldiers in an intergalactic battle against the Skrulls, another shape-changing alien race who in the process takes control over her. On reading her mind, they discover she is a human and has some connection with Dr. Wendy Lawson, the woman in her dreams. After an extremely powerful fight, she manages to breakthrough Skrull's detention but accidentally lands on Earth. She then meets S.H.I.E.L.D agent Nick Fury who agrees to help her find Dr. Lawson to end the intergalactic battle. However, the shape-shifting aliens follow her to the planet and eventually tracks her down. The plot sees a massive twist following the same making some unexpected revelations about her past.  

Verdict 

Captain Marvel is a warrior hero with a heart. She rightly evolves to end the battle and not to fight it. It is spectacular to see how a normal human eventually turns into the most powerful superhero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She definitely goes through the dilemma of what's right and what's wrong. However, she seems to have managed to figure it out by the end. The film not only showcases the journey of the 'new Avenger' if we might call her so, but it also connects several dots from the previous ventures making some intriguing disclosures about the Tesseract cube. 

Interestingly, the film portrays a drastically different image of Nick Fury. It explores a funny, sensible and soft side of the serious and to-the-point kind of man who viewers have come across in the previous ventures.  

Brie Larson has done an extremely good job portraying the exceptionally powerful superhero. Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, and rest of the cast also did a remarkable job with their convincing performances. However, unlike most of the Marvel ventures, 'Captain Marvel' looked a bit more hyper-real. Viewers might find it a bit over-done in a few scenes.

What works: Gripping storyline, Interesting twists, and the performance of the actors. 

What doesn't: More hyper-real than usual Marvel ventures.
