Santosh Submitted For Oscars By The UK: All About The Hindi Film Premiered At Cannes Film Festival

Days after Laapataa Ladies was selected as India’s official entry for Oscars 2025, another Hindi film Santosh, but not from India. The Shahana Goswami starrer has been submitted by the United Kingdom as its official entry to the 97th Academy Awards. Sandhya Suri’s fiction feature debut has been submitted for the Best International Feature Film category.

Santosh’s previous achievements

Santosh has been selected by the UK as their official entry in the race for the Best International Feature Film at the 2025 Oscars. According to a report by Deadline, the film was selected for BAFTA as well. Santosh marks the narrative feature debut of Suri, whose breakout documentary I For India competed at Sundance. Her short film The Field was nominated for the BAFTA for Best Short Film in 2019 and won Best International Short at Toronto in 2018.

In another feather to their cap, Santosh premiered Un Certain Regard at this year’s 77th Cannes Film Festival. For the unversed, Santosh became eligible for selection in the UK as it had a wide release there and was backed by British producers. 

According to a report Deadline, to be eligible, a British film must be predominantly non-English language and released theatrically outside of the US between 1 November 2023 and 30 September 2024. 

All about Santosh

Santosh is a Hindi-language crime drama film which was released in 2024. The film follows the story of a 28-year-old widow who takes her late husband’s job as a police officer and has to investigate the case of a young girl’s murder.

Written and directed by Sandhya Suri, the film stars Shahana Goswami, Sunita Rajwat, Kushal Dubey, Sanjay Bishnoi, Shashi Beniwal and Nawal Shukla among others. The film was released on July 17, 2024. Santosh is produced by Good Chaos, with co-producers Razor Film and Haut et Court, and is financed by BFI and BBC Film.
