Suckermouth catfish native to Amazon found in Varanasi; termed 'dangerous for Ganges'

The suckermouth catfish are native to the Amazon rainforest in South America and their discovery in the waters of Ganges in an alarming incident.

In an alarming incident, a suckermouth catfish was found in river Ganga in Varanasi, Uttar Presh. suckermouth catfish are native to Amazon rainforest in South America and ir discovery in waters of Ganges in an alarming incident because it is considered an invasive species. catfish was caught by a fisherman in Varanasi.

Threat to or marine organisms

suckermouth catfish are considered dangerous because y are carnivorous and pose threat to or marine organisms around m. catfish can multiply manifolds and population keeps increasing as it does not have a natural predator because y are tasteless. Scientists from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) examined suckermouth catfish and confirmed that y are same species found in Amazon. 

scientists vised against releasing suckermouth catfish back into Ganges citing concerns that it will pose a serious threat to or marine creatures and ecosystems of river by consuming most of food sources.

According to a Twitter user named Punam Kerketta, whose bio res 'Environmentalist/Conservationist/WildLife (Indigenous Knowledge, Languages, Art & Culture)', discovery of suckermouth catfish is second of its kind within a month. She says that discovery may even cause native species of Ganges to go extinct.

Earlier this year, Amazon sailfin catfish was found in norastern state of Manipur. According to Punam, it was also found in Ganges river of Bihar a few years ago and in Brahmaputra river in Assam.
