Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi are gearing up for the release of their movie Amaran, a biographical action war film directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. In the movie, Sivakarthikeyan plays the titular role of Major Mukund. However, do you know the movie is based on the true story of a war hero Major Mukund Varadarajan? This heroic story is also mentioned in the book series India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh.
Who was Major Mukund Varadarajan?
Major Mukund served in the Rajput Regiment of the Indian Army. He's a recipient of the Ashoka Chakra. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his actions during a counterterrorism operation while on deputation to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu and Kashmir.

An alumnus of the Officers Training Academy, Mukund received a short-service commission as a Lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment (22 Rajput) on March 18, 2006, and received an ante-dated promotion to Captain from October 18, 2008. He served at the Infantry School in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh and was part of a United Nations Mission in Lebanon. He was promoted to Major on October 18, 2012, and was deputed to the 44th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles that December and posted in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Major Mukund Varadarajan - A Martyr
On April 25, 2014, he led an operation that eliminated three top-ranked Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists. He completed the mission despite sustaining serious injuries in the crossfire. Though some of Altaf Wani's hit Mukund in the process, he initially appeared unharmed as he emerged from the outhouse. An officer in the surrounding cordon noted, "He looked okay. We thought he was fine." But shortly after, Mukund collapsed, having sustained three gunshot wounds. He lost consciousness and, despite efforts to evacuate him, succumbed to his injuries.

What do we know about Sai Pallavi's role in Amaran?
In the movie, Pallavi will play the role of Indhu Rebecca Varghese, Mukund's wife. She was his long-time girlfriend before getting married in August 2009. Two years later, they welcomed a daughter in March 2011.
When will Amaran release?
Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International, together with Sony Pictures Films India, the movie is slated to hit the theatres on October 31, on the occasion of Diwali .
