Mukund Varadarajan was born on April 12, 1983, in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu to a Tamil-speaking Brahmin family. Coming from a family with a strong military tradition from his grandfar and two uncles who served in armed forces, he felt motivated to follow a similar path. Mukund graduated from Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya and obtained a diploma in journalism from Madras Christian College. His desire to serve country led him to enlist in army.
He met Indhu Rebecca Varghese in college and fell in love at first sight. Although y maintained a long-distance relationship for several years, Mukund joined Rajput Regiment 22 Rajput through Officers Training Academy, initially receiving a short-service commission in 2006 before transitioning to a permanent commission. After many years toger, couple tied kt in 2009.

Mukund’s leadership and tactical skills gained recognition early in his career, leading to his promotion to rank of a Major in 2012. That same year, he joined 44th Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles, a counterinsurgency unit active in troubled Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. During his time with this battalion, Mukund undertook an act of bravery that secured his place in Indian military history.
Major Mukund Varadarajan, who served in Rajput Regiment of Indian Army, received Ashoka Chakra posthumously for his cour in a counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir.

After her husband's heroic death in 2014, Mukund's wife left with ir three-year-old daughter, having been married for less than five years.
