Leo director Lokesh Kanagaraj opens up on writing progress for upcoming LCU films

the upcoming films in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe include Kaithi 2 starring Karthi, Vikram 2 with Kamal Haasan, and Rolex starring Suriya.

Leo filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj recently spoke about his love for crossover films, and also opened up on his writing plans for upcoming films in Lokesh Cinematic Universe, which Leo was a part of. Kanagaraj was in an exclusive interview with Variety when he opened up about se subjects

Leo is a part of Kanagaraj’s crossover film series (referred to as Lokesh Cinematic Universe or LCU by filmmaker’s fans). said universe earlier included films like 2019 release Kaithi and 2022 Kamal Haasan starrer Vikram.  Talking about his fascination for crossovers, Kanagaraj stated “I have always been fascinated to do crossover films or have some connection between films I make. While in writing process of Vikram, it seemed to be a good opportunity to explore same with my previous film Kaithi.” Kanagaraj also clarified that while he has not started writing any of above-stated films yet, ding, “re’s alrey a foundation to it. Once I start writing, I will explore more.”

Reportedly, upcoming films in said universe include Kaithi 2, starring Karthi, Vikram 2 with Kamal Haasan and Rolex starring Suriya. It is to be noted that Suriya appeared as Rolex in final act of Vikram, eliciting a lot of excitement from filmgoers.

Talking about influence of 2005 film A History of Violence on his career, Kanagaraj stated, “It inspired me to write ‘Leo.’ ‘A History of Violence’ left its mark on me and from that, this movie was born. Leo is my tribute.

Writing anchors entire process: Lokesh Kanagaraj

Leo filmmaker was also asked about challenges of working within dynamics of Tamil film Industry. He replied, “re are opportunities at every stage of filmmaking, it’s all about how you utilize m. When it comes to challenges, I would say ‘writing’ because it anchors entire process.”

Kanagaraj also clarified that his next film, currently identified as #Thalaivar171, is not going to be a part of LCU. "It’s a genre that I’m trying for first time,” Kanagaraj said. Anor film outside LCU is sci-fi epic Irumbukkai Mayavi, expected to star Suriya.

Meanwhile, Leo's worldwide collections stand at 576 crores nett, making it fifth highest-grossing Indian film of year.
