Veteran actor Sathyaraj reflected on how stardom has impacted the versatility of contemporary movie stars. In a recent discussion with OTTPlay, he expressed that the commercial success of actors such as Prabhas and Vijay has unintentionally limited the variety of roles they undertake.

Sathyaraj says Prabhas and Vijay cannot experiment with their roles

Sathyaraj lamented that versatility, once a hallmark of empowered actors, is becoming scarce among today's stars. He attributed this to the expanding market and business surrounding certain heroes, which necessitates that their projects appeal to a global audience. Consequently, this trend mandates bigger productions and restricts these stars from exploring a wider range of roles.

"I think that is because the market and business of a few heroes have grown. So, when the projects they take on also get bigger, the films have to be dubbed so that audiences across the world can see them. It becomes a mandate, which restricts them from indulging in a variety of roles," he said.

Citing examples, Sathyaraj mentioned that Vijay, known for films like Love Today, Thulladha Manamum Thullum, and Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, now faces constraints due to his stardom. Similarly, Prabhas, who previously excelled in romance films, has been confined to larger-than-life roles post- Baahubali.

He said, "Vijay has done films like Love Today, Thulladha Manamum Thullum, and Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. They were so successful, too. But now that he is a big star and business has grown around him, he cannot come back to doing such films. Prabhas is another example where he has done a lot of romance films, but after Baahubali, you can only see him in larger-than-life roles. Today’s cinema has become such."

What's next for Sathyaraj?

Currently, Sathyaraj is promoting his upcoming film Weapon, in which he portrays a superhuman character. The film also features actor Vasanth Ravi. Additionally, Sathyaraj is set to appear in Rajinikanth's forthcoming film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and is rumoured to be involved in AR Murugadoss’s project Sikander.
