Director TJ Gnanvel of Jai Bhim fame has assembled a pan-India cast for the action drama, with Amitabh Bachchan , Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier and Dushara Vijayan playing pivotal roles alongside the Superstar. Ahead of the film hitting the big screens, trade experts predicted a decent opening for the movie given the genre.

Vettaiyan opened to mixed reviews, with many pointing out how it fails to tread the line between commercial and thought-provoking. Despite this, the first-day collection of the film has been promising.

Vettaiyan earned around 30.00 Cr India net on its first day for all languages, early estimates reported by Sacnilk suggested. Tamil Nadu has emerged as the biggest market for Rajinikanth's film, with collections of ₹26.15 crore. Telugu and Hindi markets followed with earnings of ₹3.2 crore and 30 lakh respectively.

The movie has emerged as the second-highest day-one grosser for a Tamil film in 2024, after GOAT, starring Thalapathy Vijay. However, the numbers paint a sorry picture for Rajinikanth starrer as GOAT amassed ₹52 crore on its opening day.

Vettaiyan vs Jailer: Which Rajinikanth starrer opened better?

Vettaiyan comes after the massive worldwide success of Jailer. Rajinikanth 2023 blockbuster collected over ₹600 crore at the global box office, becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. Vettaiyan pales in comparison and is unlikely to match up to the numbers that Jailer did last year.

Meanwhile, Jailer collected ₹56.6 crore on day 1 in India in all languages. It eventually went on to gross ₹408.5 crore at the domestic box office and emerged as a big success on streaming as well.
