Byomkesh Bakshi is a fictional character created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Between 1932 to 1970 32 stories were written by him based on this character. Byomkesh Bakshi was described as a very observant, logical, and forensic science expert who used to solve complicated cases, usually murders.

The character of Byomkesh Bakshi is often thought to be inspired by the world-famous fictional character of Sherlock Holmes. He was also a detective good at solving crime cases. Sherlock Homles is a fictional character written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The stories of Sherlock Homles were published in the late 1800s. The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been adapted in many films and stories. Sherlock Homles was assisted by another fictional character John H. Watson, known as Dr Watson. Watson is Sherlock Holmes' friend, assistant, and sometime flatmate, and the first-person narrator of all but four of these stories. This similarity can be seen in Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s stories of Byomkesh Bakshi too. He also had a friend, flatmate, and assistant named Ajit. He too met Byomkesh and penned down the stories of Byomkesh Bakshi.

Although there are some striking similarities between the two characters, their stories are very different. Hence fans of Byomkesh Bakshi always argue that the two are different from each other. They also say that Byomkesh Bakshi was a different character altogether. He originated in India, and he was too Indianised to be compared to Sherlock Homles.
