Nag Ashwin's pan-India film Kalki 2898 AD released in theatres on June 27. It has emerged as a blockbuster hit and sparked numerous fan theories in its wake. Set in a dystopian future, it combines elements of mythology with sci-fi and is led by Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and Disha Patani. There are a few scenes of Mahabharata that have been interpreted by Nag Ashwin. One such sequence plays out early on in the movie and features Tamil actor Krishnakumar Balasubramanian as Lord Krishna in the battle of Kurukshetra. However, his face has been hidden in the film.
Nag Ashwin explains why Lord Krishna’s face was hidden in ‘Kalki 2898 AD’
In a recent interview, Nag Ashwin talked about the reason why he didn’t reveal the face of Lord Krishna in Kalki 2898 AD. He said, “The idea was always to keep him a silhouette and formless without an identity. Otherwise, it just becomes a person or an actor. The idea was always to keep him dark-skinned and show him as a mysterious figure."

The director added that he has no plans to reveal the face of Lord Krishna in the movie, hinting that the character will make a return in the sequel of the two-part franchise. “There is no plan to reveal the face, and we will continue to portray him as a silhouette,” Nag Ashwin added. Though Krishnakumar’s face was hidden in the film, the role was liked by the audience. The dubbing in Arjun Das’ voice was also well-received.
Nag Ashwin also addressed rumours of Vijay Deverakonda and Dulquer Salmaan returning as Arjuna and Captain respectively in the sequel. “They're pretty much limited to what roles they have. It's possible to expand it into something else, especially for Dulquer. But as of now, it's what it is,” he said.
