Who Is Ranjith, Veteran Malayalam Director Accused In Multiple Sexual Assault Cases In MeToo Wave?
Kerala police have recently registered two cases of sexual assault against film director Ranjith. A fresh complaint was registered by a young actor.
The Hema Committee Report has sparked a #MeToo movement within the Malayalam film industry. Earlier this month, a redacted version of the report, prepared by Justice K Hema, was released, revealing disturbing cases of harassment, exploitation and mistreatment of women in the industry. The 235-page report highlights that around 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors, who are part of a 'power group', dominate and control the Malayalam film industry. Filmmaker Ranjith's name was also mentioned among the high-profile culprits. Recently, his name has emerged again, following previous allegations of sexual misconduct by a Bengali actress and a young, aspiring actor.
Sexual assault cases against Ranjith
Kerala police have recently registered two cases of sexual assault against film director Ranjith. A fresh complaint was registered by a young actor. The latest case was filed in Kozhikode on 31 August, shortly after the release of the Hema Committee report.
On Friday, 30 August, a young male actor accused Ranjith of forcing him to strip naked and sexually assaulting him in 2012. The incident allegedly occurred during an audition at a hotel in Bengaluru, which Ranjith had arranged. The actor initially thought the assault was part of the audition process. The following morning, Ranjith offered him money. The actor has since complained to the DGP, and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is expected to take it up. Kerala Police confirmed to ANI that they received this complaint against the filmmaker.
Earlier, on 24 August, Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra filed a complaint with the Kochi City Police, accusing Ranjith of 'misbehaviour' during a film project discussion in 2009. This accusation led to significant public outrage against the director.
