Fact Check: Does an 890 prefix in a bar code indicate that the product is made in India?

Fact Check: There has been a post circulating on social media portals that claims that the barcode for products made in India has the numbers 890 as a prefix.

Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi asked citizens of India in his recent speech to use as many Indian products and locally manufactured products as possible. Since n, re have been many messs and posts on Twitter and or social media portals that send out an appeal to t use any products that come from or countries. Along with se messs, re were certain posts that claimed that looking at barcode given behind product, one can determine wher it is made in India or someplace else.

picture showing differentiation between Chinese and Indian products was shared on Twitter and it slowly started spreading across all social media. picture shared in this mess claims that Chinese products have barcodes in which first 3 digits are from 690 to 699. This indicates that y are from China. It n says that barcodes that have numbers 890 as first three digits belong to India.

Barcode for products made in India

first three digits of any country depend on various bar code standards that country follows. While countries in Europe go for European Article Number, US follows UPC-A bar code. As per Barcode 1, 890 barcode comes from GS1 India. It debunks myth that this barcode number shows country of origin. Rar, first few digits show country of origin of barcode number, t of product. Thus, products having barcodes that start from 890 are t necessarily produced in country. As given in FAQs of GS1:

An EAN-13 barcode number always starts with GS1 Prefix of  GS1 Member Organisation that allocated barcode number.  GS1 Prefix does t indicate that  product was manufactured in a specific country or by a specific manufacturer; it may have been produced anywhere in world.

This also clears out fact that 690 to 699 does t mean that product is from China. While one does come to kw where given barcode of product is from which country, one cant figure out wher product belongs from which country.

Giving an example, if a French company imports some product from India and ships it to Ireland, country code of product’s barcode might indicate French origin. So if people in Ireland are t eating Indian products, y will have idea that product is originally from India.
