Ace fashion designer, Rohit Bal, passed away on November 1 after succumbing to a prolonged heart ailment. The storyteller of India's rich traditions through handcrafted attires was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, a cardiac condition, in 2023. The Kashmiri designer breathed his last at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital.
What is dilated cardiomyopathy?
Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a medical condition that enlarges the heart's left ventricle, resulting in a weakened pumping ability. This condition messes up the heart's ability to efficiently pump blood gradually leading to cause heart failure.

This also known as a form of non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, that is usually considered the primary cause for this condition as it results in reduced blood flow to one's heart muscle.
The accurate cause of Dilated Cardiomyopathy remains unknown, however, its triggered by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors. There are some common factors behind the disease are genetic mutations, viral infections affecting the heart muscle, exposure to toxins or certain medications, excessive alcohol consumption and nutritional deficiencies.

This condition can develop in people of all ages, but it primarily detected in people of ages 20 to 60.

Fatigue: Persistent and unexplained tiredness.
Shortness of breath: Difficulty breathing, particularly during physical activity or while lying down.
Edema: Swelling in the legs and ankles due to fluid retention.
Inconsistent heartbeat: Experiencing a rapid, irregular pulse.
Weakness: Overall weakness or discomfort.
