Mpox , a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, is transmitted through contact with infected animals like monkeys and rodents. Though endemic, Mpox can also spread among humans, causing symptoms such as rashes, fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and scabs. The severity of these symptoms can vary.
Risks of being diagnosed with Mpox during pregnancy
Pregnant women face varying risks when infected with Mpox . The primary concern is vertical transmission, where the virus can pass from the mother to the fetus via the placenta. This can result in serious outcomes such as preterm birth, congenital Mpox , miscarriage, or stillbirth in severe cases.

Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to severe Mpox symptoms due to their altered immune system, which can exacerbate the infection. Additionally, babies born to mothers with Mpox are at increased risk of complications including skin lesions, respiratory distress, and fever.
Precautionary measures to undertake for pregnant women
Dr Rahul Tambe, Sr Consultant at Internal Medicine at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai said,"Pregnant women need to be extra careful about Mpox due to the increased risk of complications for both themselves and their unborn babies. Since Mpox mainly spreads through close physical contact, pregnant women should avoid being around infected people or in places where the virus could spread. This includes staying away from crowded areas, limiting physical interactions, and following strict hygiene practices like frequent handwashing with soap, using hand sanitizer, and not sharing personal items like towels, bedding, or utensils."

"Pregnant women should also consider using protective gear, like masks and gloves, especially if they are caring for someone who might be infected. Staying in well-ventilated spaces and keeping physical distance in communal settings are also important for prevention. If a pregnant woman contracts Mpox , the virus could affect the fetus, possibly leading to miscarriage, early delivery, or Mpox in the newborn."
To manage Mpox during pregnancy, timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Diagnosis typically involves PCR testing of skin samples and blood tests to confirm the presence of the virus. For severe cases, antiviral medications like Tecovirimat (TPOXX) are prescribed, which can help mitigate the effects of the infection.
