Upset Stomach? Know The Reasons And Treatments

Several factors can contribute to an upset stomach, including medication, food and drinks, lifestyle habits, and stress.

Having an upset stomach can make you feel uncomfortable and affect those around you. Symptoms like bloating, nausea, or diarrhoea can disrupt your daily life, preventing you from going to work or school, running errands, or even enjoying vacations.

Several factors can contribute to an upset stomach, including medication, food and drinks, lifestyle habits, and stress.

To help you better understand and manage the discomfort, we’ve outlined some of the most common reasons behind an upset stomach.

Reasons for an Upset Stomach

Stress: Although stress is not as common a cause as food and drinks, it can lead to an upset stomach. For instance, meeting a new person or your partner’s family can cause stress that contracts the blood vessels in your stomach, leading to discomfort.

Serious Conditions: If you experience severe or consistent stomach aches or abnormal pelvic pain, it could be a sign of a more serious condition, such as malignancy (cancer).

Processed Foods: Frequent consumption of processed foods like wheat, cake, bread, pasta, and other spicy and oily foods can upset your stomach. It's best to limit your intake of these items.

Lactose Intolerance: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms can occur due to lactose intolerance, leading to digestion issues and an upset stomach.

Ulcers: Persistent pain in the stomach might indicate the presence of an ulcer in the stomach lining.

Infections: Diarrhea caused by infections is common and usually resolves on its own, but it's important to be mindful of what you eat and drink during this time.

Treatment

Eat Home-Cooked Meals: Prioritize home-cooked meals whenever possible. 

Balanced Diet: Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and yoghurt into your.

De-stress: Close your eyes and try to calm down yourself by breathing in and out for 10 seconds.

Tobacco and alcohol: Avoiding the usage of tobacco and alcohol could lower the risk of having unnecessary ulcers in your stomach.
