62% sitting Jharkhand MLAs have criminal cases, 52% crorepatis: ADR

According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), sixty-two percent of sitting MLAs in Jharkhand's Assembly have declared criminal cases

According to a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), sixty-two percent of sitting MLAs in Jharkhand's Assembly have declared criminal cases against themselves. The ADR examined the affidavits of 79 sitting MLA's in the parliament. "Out of the 79 sitting MLAs analyzed, 49 MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Thirty-eight MLAs have declared serious criminal cases." the report released by the association said.

"Out of the 79 sitting MLAs analyzed,49 MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves. Thirty-eight MLAs have declared serious criminal cases" the release said. The release further stated that three MLAs have declared related to murder and 10 MLAs have declared cases related to attempt to murder. 36 MLAs from BJP, 11 out of 18 MLAs from JMM and 5 out of 8 MLAs from Congress have declared charges against themselves, the report revealed.

52 percent of the MLAs are 'crorepatis'

The release further said that 52 percent of the MLAs are 'crorepatis'. The average assets per sitting MLA are Rs 1.84 crore. 21 MLAs from the BJP,9 MLAs from JMM,5 MLAs from Congress and three MLAs from JVM(P) have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore. "Twenty-eight MLAs have declared their educational qualifications to be between classes 8 and 12, while 63 percent MLAs declared educational qualification of graduation and above.

EC appoints expenditure observer ahead of Jharkhand Assembly Polls

The Election Commission appointed a retired Judge.B Murali Kumar as a special expenditure officer. The officer will work closely with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). "The observer will ensure that stricter and stringent enforcement action is undertaken based on intelligence inputs and complaints received against persons distributing freebies, liquor or cash said the statement by the Election Commission.

Jharkhand Assembly elections

The Election Commission of India, on November 1, announced the polling schedule for Assembly elections in Jharkhand. The election for all 81 Assembly seats will happen in five phases spanning over 20 days. Counting of votes for all phases will happen together on December 23.  The BJP-AJSU alliance is being challenged by Opposition parties such as former chief ministers Shibu Soren and Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the Indian National Congress and the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) (JVM-P).
