7-member NHRC team visits Jamia Millia to probe police action against students

A 7-member team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) visited the Jamia Millia Islamia University to probe into the police action against students.

On Friday, a 7-member team of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) visited Jamia Millia Islamia University. ir purpose was to inquire into alleged police action against students after entering campus. As per a University official, team heed by SSP (Investigation) Manzil Saini visited library and inquired about sequence of events of December 15. As per Jamia students, police h entered library forcefully and h started abusing m.

University official varsity Azeem Ahmed remarked, " team heed by SSP (Investigation) Manzil Saini inspected Library and enquired about whole incident that took place on December 15, 2019."

On December 15, people protesting against  Citizenship Amendment Act clashed with police in New Friends Colony near Jamia Millia Islamia University leaving nearly 60 people injured. Subsequently, re were reports of students being injured and detained as police entered Jamia campus. Students at universities across India protested against action of Delhi police in Jamia. This included Aligarh Muslim University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Maulana Az National Urdu University, Banaras Hindu University, and IIT Mras. In early hours of Monday, 50 students were released by police from  Kalkaji police station and New Friends Colony police station. Meanwhile,  10 people arrested in connection with this were sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Delhi HC issues tice

After Supreme Court asked petitioners seeking relief pertaining to alleged police action against anti-CAA protesters to approach respective High Courts, a plea was filed in Delhi High Court pertaining to Jamia violence. division bench of HC issued a tice to Centre and Delhi Police, journing matter until February 4. court also denied interim protection to students from coercive measures by police including arrest. reafter, demand of petitioner’s counsel for an earlier date of hearing was also turned down.
