Aarey forest axing: Lata Mangeshkar firmly against 'tragic' decision
Lata Mangeshkar reacts to the decision made by the BMC to chop 2,700 trees in the Aarey forest to construct a car shed for the metro in the Aarey colony.

Lata Mangeshkar, legendary singer, recently took to Twitter to vouch for Aarey Forests. She urged government to look into matter and devise a plan for its annulment. BMC had earlier allowed axing of 2,700 trees. This process is to take place to construct a car shed for metro in Aarey colony, adjacent to suburban Goregaon.

Bombay HC seeks to obtain answers on axing of Aarey
Bombay High Court has asked Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) to respond to petition filed against axing of trees in Aarey Forest. This petition was filed by Zoru Darius who questioned chopping of 2,700 trees. petition stated that Tree Authority that comes under Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, issued a public tice asking people for ir opinions on a proposal by MMRCL, seeking removal of around 2,700 trees at Aarey on June 30, 2019. Over one lakh people objected to proposal which called for a public meeting. public meeting was attended by Zoru Darius and 500 or people to protest against decision.

BMC response to Aarey
BMC responded on September 4, stating that trees will be cut in a fortnight as formal clearance is yet to be obtained. BMC told Bombay HC that clearance process will take 15 days. Tree Authority has 19 members at present including BMC Commissioner. Five of se members are independent experts minated by BMC in accordance with ir own rules and regulations. BMC however, did t answer back to hundreds of people objecting to felling of trees. Furrmore, three experts from Tree Authority had earlier stated that y did t have adequate time to go through proposal to examine all trees that are to be axed.
