Post Beirut attack,Customs addresses concern over ammonium nitrate storage in Chennai port

Amid the Beirut explosion, a concern was expressed about ammonium nitrate which is stored in the Chennai port. But the authorities ruled out the need for panic

explosion which happened at Leban's capital Beirut has sent shockwaves across globe after killing 135 people, injuring several ors, and creating an unimaginable amount of infrastructure loss.  Lebanese government initially said it was due to fireworks and later it was found that 2,700 kg of ammonium nitrate was stored in port's warehouse was reason for catastrophic explosion. While shockwaves are still vibrating, reports which came in from Chennai port suggested that 740 tonnes of ammonium nitrate is been stocked at Chennai port for over 5 years, since a Tamil Nu-based fertilizer and chemical company didn't obtain proper clearance for chemical.

'740 tonnes of ammonium nitrate is stored safely'

As soon as report was out, PMK founder leer Ramoss raised issue in a tweet that ammonium nitrate which is stored in Chennai port should be cleared safely as same chemical created havoc at Leban recently and requested goverr's intervention. After approaching customs HQ in Chennai, officials gave an explanation that it is safe and people need t panic about it.

"740 tonnes of ammonium nitrate is stored safely at a chemical warehouse in Manali in outskirts of Chennai where re are buildings or residential areas around," said a top customs official regarding controversy.

Officials also say that chemical is safely stored re for 5 years as company didn't obtain necessary clearance and chemical experts also have checked safety standards of particular warehouse recently. y also ded that process of conducting an e-auction is underway as per court's order and it will be cleared once auction is done. Ammonium nitrate is a common industrial chemical used in fertilizer and as a component in mining explosives.
