A G Noorani, renowned scholar, prolific writer, and distinguished legal expert, has passed away at his residence in Mumbai. He was 94. The news of his death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the country, reflecting on his significant contributions to law, literature, and constitutional discourse.

A Storied Career in Law and Literature

Born Abdul Ghafoor Majeed Noorani on September 16, 1930, in Mumbai, Noorani's legal career was marked by an illustrious practice in both the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court. He was a well-respected authority in constitutional matters and authored several influential books, including The Kashmir Dispute 1947-2012Article 370: A Constitutional History of Jammu and Kashmir, and The Destruction of Hyderabad. Noorani also penned biographies of prominent figures such as former President Dr. Zakir Husain and Badruddin Tyabji, the first Indian barrister of the High Court of Mumbai during British rule.

Defender of Rights and Advocate of Justice

Noorani was known for his advocacy on several significant legal and political issues. He defended National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah during his extended detention and appeared in the Bombay High Court on behalf of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi against his political rival, J Jayalalitha. His contributions extended to writing extensively on issues affecting Indian Muslims and presenting numerous papers at seminars nationwide.

Tributes and Condolences

The passing of A G Noorani has elicited heartfelt tributes from various quarters. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his condolences, stating, "Sorry to hear about the demise of A G Noorani Sb earlier today. Noorani Sb was a man of letters, an accomplished lawyer, a scholar & a political commentator. He wrote extensively on matters of law and on subjects like Kashmir, RSS and the constitution. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannat."

Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also paid tribute, noting, "…Kashmir loses a true advocate and scholar."

Asaduddin Owaisi, President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Member of Parliament, remarked, “AG Noorani, a giant among scholars, has passed away. I learnt a great deal from him, from the constitution to Kashmir, to China & even the art of appreciating good food. May Allah grant him maghfirah.”
