A Congress committee is likely to visit North-East states to assess the situation on the NRC issue, as per ANI sources. The committee will include leaders Jairam Ramesh and Mukul Wasnik. The delegation will visit North-eastern states from November 5  to November 15. The Committee will also submit a report to Congress interim President Indira Gandhi.

Congress calls a meeting to discuss NRC

Earlier in August, the part sought details of people left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and worked out a plan with its functionaries in Assam to help and provide legal aid to those affected, sources said. A meeting comprising of senior Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Ahmed Patel, A K Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Mukul Sangma, and Gaurav Gogoi, was called to discuss the issue. The Congress will stand by all those genuine citizens who have been left out of the NRC and will continue to fight for them and provide legal aid, Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said.

The Congress party has been at loggerheads with the Centre over the implementation of NRC. The party has accused the BJP led Central government of politicising the issue. In the final NRC list published on August 31 for Assam, a total of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion in the list leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not submit their claims.

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register maintained by the Government of India containing names and certain relevant information for identification of Indian citizens of Assam state.
