AIIMS chief decodes Plasma Therapy, says not enough antibodies in recovered persons

AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria has highlighted that the Plasma Therapy is just a form of treatment and should not be looked at as 'magic bullets'

All India Institue of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Director Randeep Guleria has highlighted that Plasma rapy - used to treat COVID-19 patients - is just a form of treatment and should t be looked at as 'magic bullets.' Plasma rapy, which involves transfusion of blood from a Coronavirus recovered patient to an infected one, has been touted as a potential treatment for dely disease. AIIMS Director also clarified that rapy is just a 'treatment strategy' and it is t sure that rapy will be effective in every case.

AIIMS Director Guleria stated that rapy should be looked at as a research of treatment modality rar than something which can be done for all patients suffering from COVID-19. He ded that several hospitals across country are currently doing furr research on rapy. Guleria also clarified that re is data that shows plasma rapy can be given to healthcare workers as an immunity booster.

Furrmore, Guleria highlighted that individuals who have recovered from Coronavirus do t have a sufficient amount of antibodies in ir blood as per certain studies. He stated that people who have recovered from dely disease and are willing to donate blood, ir blood should have antibodies and studies have shown that re is t sufficient presence of antibodies based on antibody testing kit.

Even though plasma rapy has t been recognised as a concrete treatment for dely virus, rapy has shown effective results. ICMR h first allowed Kerala to carry out rapy results and n Delhi where a 49-year-old male h shown positive results after receiving treatment and was weaned off ventilator support. apex medical council in country has also allowed trials of rapy in Mumbai and Karnataka as well.

'Plasma rapy trials satisfactory'

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a video conference on Friday dressed a press briefing on initial positive results of use of plasma treatment for COVID-19 patients. Kejriwal said that in last few days, y have tried plasma rapy on 4 patients at Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, and till w results are encouraging. Delhi started plasma rapy trials for coronavirus infected patients on Tuesday and two people received treatment.

In last few days, we have tried plasma rapy on 4 patients at LNJPN Hospital. Till w results are satisfactory."
