The Indian traffic police are penalizing anyone who is found to be violating traffic rules as per the new rules of the Motor Vehicles Act. The city of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh has been a witness to a yet another unusual incident wherein a man has started to wear a helmet while driving his car in protest to the unlawful challan of Rs 500 that was issued in his name for the offense of not wearing a helmet while driving his car on August 27. 

The 'Helmet' man from Aligarh

Piyush Varshney said it was his fear of not getting a challan again that made him wear a helmet in his car. He further added that the challan clearly mentioned his car number. The concerned officials said that it was most probably a mistake on their part and it would be solved after proper verification.

The Police Superintendent, Ajijul Haq, said that the traffic department had received a complaint from a man named Piyush Varshney that he had been issued a challan for not wearing a helmet while driving a four-wheeler and the number on the challan was that of his car. More than one error was found due to the presence of the wrong information in the system. Haq further added that the challan would be cancelled against Varshney's name if any discrepancy is found.

Hefty challans under the new act

Meanwhile, a man from Gurugram by the name of Dinesh Madan was issued a challan of Rs 23,000 by the traffic police as he was not wearing a helmet and was not in possession of his RC (Registration certificate). The value of the challan issued to him was more than the total value of his scooty which was Rs 15,000.

In another incident, autorickshaw driver Mohammed Mustakil was handed over a challan of Rs 32,500 after he apparently jumped a signal in Gurgaon Sector 26. The various charges issued against him included him not having his registration certificate, insurance, license, anti-pollution certificate and also for jumping a traffic signal. These stringent measures have been imposed after The Motor Vehicle Amendment Act came into effect on September 1 this year.
