While the poll battle in the constituency was minimal, the crucial issue for Wayanad was the lack of basic infrastructure and tribal land disputes. Forest dwellers belonging to the Paniyas, Kurumas, Adiyars, Kurichyas and Kattunaikkans ethnic groups in Wayanad had remained oblivious to the intense political uproar over the Congress chief's move to go down south along with contesting on his bastion, saying food, shelter and fighting elephant attacks are issues of priority for them, as per reports.

Rahul Gandhi has been at the eye of the storm within his own party since the 2019 Lok Sabha results, over his staunch refusal to take back his resignation from the post of the Congress president, which he offered to quit after his party suffered a massive defeat in the polls managing to gather just 52 seats in the recent general elections, which is just eight more than in 2014 while BJP alone won 303 seats - its highest tally ever.

A host of political leaders like DMK Chief M K Stalin, Sheila Dikshit, Tarun Gogoi, Siddaramaiah, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Tej Pratap Yadav, Lalu Yadav, JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy have urged Rahul Gandhi to stay as the Congress president.

Many Congress state chiefs and leaders have urged Gandhi to remain as Congress president, with Maharashtra Congress making an appeal to Congress president Rahul Gandhi withdraw his resignation from his post, at the same time taking responsibility for the 'disappointing and shocking' Lok Sabha 2019 election results.
