The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, while addressing the probationers of the 2018 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) in New Delhi on October 7, urged all the women IPS officers to inspire other women to join the police force. He further stated that "gender-based reservation was not the answer to the issue of inadequate representation of women in the police". Speaking about the need to change the societal mindset, Shah explained that the base of the police system was Constable and urged the young officers to work to build their capacities.
On the need to increase women force
According to an official statement, Home Minister Amit Shah focused on the need to increase the women force in police at every level. The statement read, "He said that gender-based reservation was not the answer to the issue of inadequate representation of women in the police. He spoke of the need to change the societal mindset in this regard and expressed confidence that this would gradually happen." Speaking about improving the efficiency of the police, he stated that their job is to ensure that there is freedom among the officers to take the required decisions and responsibilities without overstepping boundaries.
On Article 370
Addressing the IPS officers, the Home Minister declared Article 370 was being misused for cross-border terrorism rather than protecting Kashmiri people's rights. He further affirmed that the Indian constitution protected all regional identities and drew strong opposition against the misuse of Article 370. According to him, it is the duty of the IPS officers to remove the fear of police from people's minds. The BJP-led central government abrogated Article 370 on August 5, revoking the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Stressing the need for NRC
According to Home Minister Amit Shah, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is important not just for national security but also for good governance. Stressing on the need of NRC, he urged the officers to not look at it as a political exercise. He stated that NRC is important to ensure that all citizens receive equal benefits from government schemes.
