Amid current law and order situation following protests against Citizenship Amendment Act, Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) ministration on Wednesday has decided to indefinitely extend its Winter vacation. varsity was originally scheduled to re-open on January 6. In a tice posted by Controller of Examinations, outstation students have been vised to return to Aligarh only once  University re-opens.

Clashes between police and students at AMU

After alleged heavy-handedness use of force by police against students at Jamia Millia Islamia University on December 15, re was tension at AMU as well. As per reports, over 17 policemen and 60 students were injured in clashes between Uttar Presh police and students. Republic TV on December 24 accessed CCTV foot from area around AMU during this incident.

visuals indicated that some students tried to forcibly break one of gates of University and y allegedly attacked police personnel reafter. On or hand, police tried to push back protesters as Section 144 was in force at that time. AMU students alleged that police personnel entered campus and used force indiscriminately.

'Police used n-lethal weapons in self-defence'

Responding to allegations of students, Akash Kulhary, SSP Aligarh on December 24 stated that AMU students were speaking from ir own perspective. Revealing that police h pinned responsibility of violence on students in affidavits submitted to Allahab High Court and Supreme Court, he claimed that police h used n-lethal weapons in self-defence. Subsequently, an FIR has been registered against 1000 unnamed students for perpetrating violence and damaging public property. 

SSP Aligarh remarked, "From beginning, in our affidavit to HC and SC, we have stated that students were aggressors. y me situation abrmal. y deliberately indulged in stone-pelting.  Police used n-lethal weapons in self-defence. Police h used minimum force to disperse m."
