Arunachal Pradesh hamlet receives treated tap water supply under Jal Jeevan Mission

In a welcoming development, hamlets of Arunachal Presh situated at international border between India and Bhutan got access to water supply in 2020. Broksarthang, a small vill in West Kameng district of Arunachal Presh were facing severe water short until w owing to its high altitude. Brokpa community that inhibited vill is occupied in Yak rearing and a mic lifestyle.
Under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), Public Health Engineering Department of state provided treated water supply to all households of vill in 2020. ministration involved community members too in planning and implementation of scheme as JJM mandates involvement of local community in planning, implementation, operation and maintenance of water supply schemes. In case of vill of Arunachal Presh, locals contributed 5% of in-vill component of water supply scheme in form of labour.

According to statement by state ministration, authorities faced challenges in planning and construction of project due to harsh wear conditions ranging from sub-zero temperature in winter and incessant rains in monsoon.
"Construction part was most difficult one because skilled masons and labourers are very scarce to get and secondly y kept on leaving worksite due to extreme cold and lack of basic facilities. Monitoring and transportation of materials during construction were equally difficult due of frozen icy ro, zero visibility due to fog and frequent landslides. But braving all se odds, work was completed as envisd in designed scheme," statement re.

Besides structural challenges, ministration also faced behavioural challenges which include convincing community to undergo a behavioural change who were reluctant to shun ir beliefs and lifestyle at beginning.

Jal Jeevan Mission
Jal Jeevan Mission is a project by Centre to provide safe and equate drinking tap water connection to every household in rural areas of country by 2024 at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day. mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 2019. PM Modi has also written to all sarpanches and gram prhans of country for more effective implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), saying its goal can be fully realised with help of vill community leers.
programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey-water manment, water conservation, rainwater harvesting. Jal Jeevan Mission will be based on a community approach to water and will include extensive Information, Education and communication as a key component of mission.
