Arvind Kejriwal opens up on lawyer-police clash; calls it unfortunate

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday expressed his hope for the resolution of the conflict between Delhi police and lawyers in the national capital. "Both lawyers and police are very important for society. The situation of conflict amongst them is unfortunate. I hope the situation improves soon. We have worked for both police and lawyers," CM Kejriwal said on Thursday while flagging off 100 new buses.

"I want to congratulate the people of Delhi as 100 new buses will now run on roads. Just like Delhi is known today for its work in the fields of education, health, soon Delhi will also be known for its public bus system. In the coming six-seven months, around 3,000 new buses will be plying on Delhi roads. Out of these 1,000 will be electric buses," the Aam Aadmi Party chief said.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered the inquiry commission which was probing into the Tis Hazari scuffle to look into instances of violence that have broken out after the incident. In the violent clashes that erupted on November 2 over a meager parking dispute, gunshots were fired which left two advocates wounded. Dozens of policemen and lawyers were also injured in the fights that followed. The visuals of the incident flashed on TV screens for days as an appalling example of a civil society breakdown.

Kejriwal's condemnation of Tis Hazari violence

Arvind Kejriwal had earlier visited St. Stephens Hospital and met gunshot victims of the Tis Hazari Court incident. He had then condemned the incident as unfortunate and appalling and assured that the Delhi government will bear expenses of the treatment of victims. Kejriwal had said, "Shots were fired against lawyers, I condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms. Firing without reason is not the right thing."

Call for good cop-lawyer relations

CM Kejriwal had also stated that advocates fight for people's justice and the police are responsible for public protection. "We want good relations between them. Only when they have good relations can people get protection and justice. So yesterday's incident was unfortunate and appalling. The government stands by the lawyers," said the Aam Aadmi Party chief.
