As PM Modi moves to assure Assam over CAB, Congress fires caustic jibe

Replying to PM Modi's message reassuring people of Assam, Congress said that the post cannot reach the North Eastern state amid an Internet shutdown there.

As protests continue in Guwahati over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill passed by both house of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday assured people of Assam that y have thing to worry about and that ir rights will be protected. Taking to Twitter after protests stunned Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured people of Assam that y have thing to worry about passing of CAB. Protests against bill have been rampant across rth-East especially in Assam. Tens of thousands of protesters against CAB descended on streets of Assam on Wednesday, clashing with police, with a large number of protestors detained by police in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, etc. Reports state that five columns of Army have been deployed at several places in Assam and Tripura. Assam government has imposed curfew and discontinued mobile internet and data services for 24 hours across 10 districts.

Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has filed a writ petition against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in Supreme Court on Thursday. Senior vocate Kapil Sibal will represent Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) in SC. IUML in its petition pleed SC to declare Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 as illegal and void.

CAB passed in Rajya Sabha

On Wednesday, Rajya Sabha passed Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019 (CAB) by a majority of 125-105 votes. This comes after more than 40 MPs including P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Ghulam Nabi Az, Derek O'Brien, Sanjay Singh, Sanjay Raut, and Vaiko put forth ir arguments eir in favour or against CAB. Earlier on Monday, Lower House of Parliament cleared legislation with a landslide margin. Once President gives his assent to Bill, it will immediately come into operation.
