Assam: Gorkhas suffer a setback after NRC, over a lakh excluded

About 1 Lakh Gorkhas have been excluded from the NRC list on August 31. Gorkhas have been hailed as one of the fiercest warriors in the Indian Armed Forces.

After National Registry of Citizens (NRC) excluded over 19 lakh individuals from list, more than about a lakh Gorkhas were among ones that were excluded. Gorkhas have been hailed as one of fiercest warriors in Indian Armed Forces. Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw once said, “If a man says he is t afraid of dying, he is eir lying or is a Gurkha.” However, Gorkhas from Assam are facing trouble after NRC list was anunced on August 31.

Required to prove ir citizenship again

Many families of former soldiers who settled in Bonda hills of Assam have been excluded from list. Several families among community who were t considered as Indian citizens have fought legal battles for years. court h granted m citizenship, but after NRC list, y are once again required to prove ir citizenship.

About NRC

NRC is a register of Indian citizens living in Assam. list was released by Government of Assam, but various arms of state and central government have been working on registry. As per NRC rules, any individual who cant prove that y or ir ancestors entered country before midnight of March 24, 1971, would be declared as a foreigner and can face deportation. first NRC list was compiled in 1951. list was updated and released on August 31 and included 3,11,21,004 individuals while excluding 19,06,657 individuals.

Ministry of Home Affairs gives assurance to those excluded

Ministry of Home Affairs said that those who have been excluded from list will t face immediate detention and will t face any consequences until all remedies available to m are exhausted. While list is t a proof of citizenship, Government has granted 120 days to reapply and defend case of those whose names have t been mentioned. People excluded from NRC list will w have to appeal to Foreigners Tribunals within stipulated time frame. se individuals will continue to enjoy all rights y are granted under Constitution of India and can purchase property, avail education and can be employed as well.  Government of Assam has me necessary arrangements to provide legal aid to  needy people through District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA). Ministry said in its statement that 200 new Foreigners Tribunals will be me functional in dition to existing 100 tribunals. Thus, n-inclusion of a person's name in NRC does t by itself amount to him/her being declared as a foreigner. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sowal has also given assurance to pacify those who were excluded from list saying, " one should be worried. one should panic. Government is here to take care of everyone. Even those who will be excluded from final list will get eugh opportunity to prove ir Indian citizenship".
