Azam Khan Relieved: HC puts stay on 27 FIRs against the SP leader

The Allahabad HC on September 25, Wednesday, put a stay on 27 FIRs registered against SP leader Azam Khan till October 24 in Mohammad Jauhar Ali University case

The Allahabad High Court on September 25, Wednesday, put a stay on 27 FIRs registered against Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan till October 24 in Mohammad Jauhar Ali University case. Azam Khan is the founder and Chancellor of the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University which came into being in 2006. The cases have been filed against him on the allegation that he grabbed farmers' land to set up the University in Rampur. 

High Court puts stay on 27 FIRs

In response to a petition filed by Azam Khan, a division bench of Justices Manoj Mishra and Manju Rani Chouhan passed the order on Wednesday.  The court has also put a stay on any coercive action and the SP leader cannot be arrested until October 24 when the court takes up the matter, said his advocate Safdar Kazmi. He also stated that during the hearing, it was revealed that the allegations made in the FIRs filed did not mention the date and how the offence happened. He also said, "It was also revealed that that the informants sold their other pieces of land peacefully to the University and they have raised no objection on them."

IPC sections registered

The cases against the former cabinet minister of UP during Akhilesh Yadav's reign have been registered under Indian Penal Code sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 447 (criminal trespass), 389 (putting a person in fear of accusation of offence, in order to commit extortion), and 506 (criminal intimidation). According to its website, the Mohammad Ali Jauhar University is spread over an area of 121 hectares and has enrolled over 3,000 students. The court has also sought response from the state government and other respondents in the case.
